Sarah, a true & profound article about the “real” life of an artist. Thank you! I have one comment regarding your description of an artist’s situation: it is so common, really universal, it seems to me, that whenever one is talking or writing about “art,” that is visual art, the reference is always to painting. As an artist in other media, I would love to see a more general term used rather than “painting.” Not every visual artist is a painter.

It’s nice to know that I can address this issue with a respected friend.

Thank you, Phyllis, for reminding me to be more inclusive in my language. It’s true that painting is a fallback word. What would be more inclusive?

There are filmmakers, sculptors, photographers, mixed media designers, ect. Maybe visual artist is a good umbrella term?

What is your favorite medium to work in?

Sarah, I really appreciate your willingness to listen to suggestions. "Visual artist" covers pretty much everything. My former husband, an artist but not a painter used to say in jest, "God is a painter."

I began in fine art photography and have segued in the last 10 or so years into various forms of printmaking, now doing monotypes. Always a struggle, but that's the fun (?).

Thanks for your Spirit. I enjoy it so much.

Phyllis

Yes! I love how naming what could be a distraction, a stimulation, brings a positive power to it!

I love that you’re a notebook keeper, in a composition notebook nonetheless: my favorite!
